BUILDING NEW HISTORIES/BREAKING DOWN MYTHS
Wednesday April 2nd, 2025

A critical conversation between past Scripps Ceramics Annual curators Jasmine Baetz and Julia Haft-Candell at the Marer Collection and Scripps Annual Exhibition in Claremont, CA.

Location: The Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College
                251 E 11th St, Claremont, CA 91711
*

This is the first Field Trip in an ongoing series hosted by The Infinite School where we'll travel around the LA region to exhibitions, artist studios, and other intriguing ceramics spaces!

For better or worse, the Marer Collection and the Scripps College Ceramic Annual have shaped the telling of Southern California Ceramic history for the past 80 years. Please join us as we attempt to dispel the myth of male genius within the collection, interrogate the implications of an Orientalist gaze within contemporary ceramics, and much more!

Jasmine Baetz (she/her) was the Lincoln Visiting Professor in Ceramics at Scripps College and Claremont Graduate University, and curated the 79th Scripps Ceramic Annual: The idea of feeling brown. This year she is teaching at Chaffey College and co-editing a book about ceramics and misogyny.
