THE INFINITE CATALOGUE
de Saisset Museum, Santa Clara University and Pitzer College Art Galleries
Julia Haft-Candell has worked in ceramic sculpture for over twenty years, using the medium to envision a symbolic utopia. She expands the historical uses of her materials as she embraces surface imperfections and transforms her exhibitions into installations for community gathering. At the center of her practice is “The Infinite,” an ever-expanding glossary of symbols—including grids, knots, eyes, and chains—which recombine throughout her forms. The artist’s first book, The Infinite, commemorates her 2023 exhibition The Yet to Be, curated by Ciara Ennis at Pitzer College Art Galleries. In 2024, the show traveled to the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University as The Infinite Library. The new publication features an interview with Ennis; an essay by Anthony Graham, Senior Curator at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; and a poem by writer and translator Anna Moschovakis. The trio of texts appear along with artwork and installation images, as well as a hand-written and illustrated version of The Infinite Glossary. The Infinite welcomes the reader into Haft-Candell’s speculative universe of creation and play.
